Profile
Dr Alfa Sa'adu
Role: Consultant Physician
Department: Care of the Elderly at Watford General Hospital
In 1979 I went to Nigeria to lecture at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria. After five years there I returned to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where I studied and taught until 1989. During this time, I completed a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, an MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine and a PhD in Clinical Immunology of Infectious Diseases.
After completing my studies I was appointed as MRC Research Senior Registrar in Clinical Immunology and Allergy at the Clinical Research Centre within the Northwick Park Hospital Complex, Harrow. I then trained in Geriatric Medicine as a Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Senior Registrar in the Department of Geriatric Medicine, University College Hospital.
From there I was appointed Consultant Physician in Care of the Elderly at Watford General Hospital, and became an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine at University College London and Royal Free Medical School.
My interests in geriatric medicine include diabetes in the elderly, ortho-geriatrics, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
I began my management career as Acting Clinical Director of the Care of the Elderly Department at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust in June 2001 and a year later became the Divisional Clinical Director for Acute Medical Care (Accident and Emergency, General Medicine, Elderly Care and Sexual Health). I was pleased to be promoted to the post of Deputy Medical Director in 2004 and have served on the Trust Board as a non-voting member. Ideally, I’d like to become a Medical Director of an Acute NHS Trust and serve as a voting member of the Board.
My hobbies include playing rugby, squash, swimming and diving, I also enjoy photography, computing and chess.
